Open Source GIS

The term "open source" refers to any program whose source code is made available for use or modification by users or other developers. Unlike proprietary software, open source software is computer software that is developed as a public, open collaboration and is free.

Open Access Journals

  

Open access is a publishing model for scholarly communication that makes research information available to readers at no cost, as opposed to the traditional subscription model in which readers have access to scholarly information only by accessing that information via a paid subscription or via an institution that pays a subscription fee. (usually via libraries). You can search for Open Access Journals via the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). DOAJ is an index of diverse open access journals from around the world that is committed to ensuring quality, freely availale content. Use the filters along the right side to choose materials that is appropriate to your assignment. 

You may for example, want to select Free (to ensure that there is no cost), a Subject Area such as GEOGRAPHY, the Language(s) of the articles, and PEER REVIEW (to ensure that the articles went through an academic quality control process).
