Tips for Success in Online Courses

Online classes offer many benefits for motivated, disciplined students. Students who cannot attend regularly scheduled on-site classes because of their jobs, their health, or other obligations, can often continue their education through online courses. Online students can typically log in at anytime of day or night, from anywhere with an Internet connection, as long as they keep up with the course schedule. While the scheduling is flexible, it is important to note that online classes have the same academic and technical rigor as their on-site counterparts, and aside from travel time, require a similar time commitment.

The following tips can help you succeed in your online class.

  • Get to know the course layout and structure. Spend time clicking around the course.
  • Access all of the materials in the Getting Started folder.
  • Identify a regular space where you will work on your online class. Make sure that you have appropriate access to a device such as a computer or tablet and access to the internet.
  • Set a schedule for when you will work on your online class and stick to that schedule. Success in online courses means meeting scheduled deadlines. Get and stay organized. Make sure you understand what the requirements and expectations of the class are, when activities are due, etc.
  • Check-in several times per week. It is expected that each week you will access and review course content and videos, participate in required discussions and complete assignments and quizzes.
  • Need help? Have questions? Just Ask! Your instructor is here to support your learning, but cannot help if they don't know what your questions are.
