World Mythology (HUM 1015)

Guide for students researching various cultural stories, beliefs, and practices

Explore World Mythology!

Your Research paper is a first person narrative (your character's voice) regarding a mythic element you have chosen for the focus of your paper. You are not simply reporting on a particular culture's mythology, but instead trying to find a deeper understanding of how the mythic elements you have chosen affected the daily lives of a participant in a certain culture. In doing so, you will also explore how a particular mythic elements relate to the history, art, literature, music, and contemporary culture of a country or region.  This page will serve as a finding aid for exploring the library collection for each culture represented. You will find books that are available in the collection, call numbers, and links to the titles in the catalog at poudrelibraries.org. The General Mythology Titles highlight books that discuss multiple mythologies, or explain how ancient cultures came to understand aspects of their own reality. The title Light, for example, begins with a discussion of creation myths and first light.

Sub-pages include:

  • Asian & Middle Eastern Cultures: China and Japan, Egypt & Mesopotamia, India/Hindu, Polynesian Mythology
  • European Cultures: Arthurian, Celtic, Greek, Norse, Roman
  • North, Meso, South American Cultures:

Disclaimer: The titles listed below may not be the complete list of available materials on the culture you decide to examine.  Use the call numbers to browse the catalog and find related materials. Also, you may not find book materials that cover your exact mythic element or focus of your paper, but be creative in your writing and talk with your instructor if you feel you are having trouble with your research. Remember that the librarians and the staff at the Harmony Library can always aid you in your research as well.
