Types of Sources

Distinguishing between sources when you're searching in FRCC Discovery or the databases can be trickier than when you're looking at a print or web version. Limiters can help, but here are some tips to help you determine the type of source you're viewing. Keep in mind the examples below do not reflect the variety of database interfaces available.

Is it a trade publication?

What to look for:

  • Volume and issue information
  • Described as "trade," "industry," or "occupational"
  • Geared towards professionals in a particular occupation with practical information
  • May use specialized jargon but not as technical as a scholarly journal

When viewing in FRCC Discovery:

  • Look for the source type above the article title. In the case of trade journals, Discovery calls them "periodicals." (Refresher: What is a periodical?). The publication name is listed in the field "Published in":

When viewing in a database, such as Engineering Database:

  • On your search results page, look for the source type in the filters in the left hand menu. In Engineering Database, Source Type includes Trade Journal.

Search results in Engineering database include results from Trade Journals. Source Type filter is on the left side of screen.

  • When you open an article by clicking on its title, you will also see Trade Journal above the article title. The publication title will be under the article title.

If you're not sure what source type you're looking at:

  • Use a search engine for the source's name and explore the journal website, paying attention to their page for Advertisers or special member newsletters. For example on the Air Conditioning, Heating, Refrigeration News website, they note repeated that they provide industry-focused topics. On their Ads page, they mention the kinds of professionals advertisers would reach in their trade journal.

air conditioning heating refrigeration news subscription would include access to industry-focused topics
