Chicago 18th Edition Citation Guide

General Citation Guidelines

  • Primary Sources: These sources have different styles of citations based on what type of object it is (letter, Latin poem, papyrus, manuscript collections, photo, journal article, etc.) Check the example pages on the left to see if you see your source. If you don't, contact an ACC librarian for the specific way to cite your primary source!
  • If there is no date for your citation put (n.d.) and then an accessed date at the end. Access dates are only necessary if no publication date can be determined from the source.
  • The first time you cite a source you will cite the full note. After that, you will use a shortened version of the citation. There will be an example of what this looks like on all of the example pages.
  • Chicago uses title case - which means that all the words are capitalized except for the, and, of, on etc.
  • Chicago recommends using one space between sentences, but contact your instructor for their individual preferences.
