This only applies to the word application. Adding and editing notes in the online version of Word is more difficult. Please contact a librarian if you have questions.
Click where you want to insert your note
Click the References Tab
Click Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote depending on your assignment instructions
Word will take your cursor to the bottom of the page
Type in your citation. Word automatically adjusts to a smaller font and single spacing
Notes will automatically format using Roman Numerals. You want them use our traditional number system (1,2,3...)
Go to your first note
Hover over it
Right click
Look at the number format box
Change to 1, 2, 3,....
Click apply
Indentations in Word
Make sure your citations have the correct indentations:
Footnote/endnotes are indented in the first line.
The Bibliography has a hanging indent
To change the indentation:
Select or highlight all of your notes or all of the citations in your bibliography.
Right click
Click Paragraph
Under Special, click either first line or hanging indent
