The Bible

Chicago references The SBL Handbook of Style for scriptural references and uses many abbreviations. Follow the basic format below and see our document above for the Chicago Style Abbreviations for the Bible. 

Footnote/Endnote 

Book, Chapter and Verse. (Edition of Bible).

Example: 

18. Heb. 13:8, 13:12 (New Revised Standard Edition).

Bibliography

The Bible does not need to be listed in the Bibliography unless otherwise noted by your instructor.

Classical Greek & Latin Texts

Below is the standard citation for well known texts. If you have a more obscure text, please contact a Librarian or The Chicago Manual of Style. 

If you are looking at a modern translation in a book, cite the work as a translated book found on the Books and eBooks example page.

Footnote/Endnote 

Creator First Name and Last Name, Location of SourceDOI/URL.

Example: 

61. Thucydides, 240.2-3.

Bibliography

Classical texts do not usually need to be listed in the Bibliography unless otherwise noted by your instructor. If you have questions about if you need a bibliographic reference, please contact a librarian!
