Colorado OER

The Colorado OER Council

The Colorado OER Council is a dynamic 15-member delegation designated by the executive director of Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE). Members include experts from various disciplines such as faculty, instructional designers, digital experts, institutional administrators, state staffers and a student representative. In conjunction with CDHE, the OER Council hosts events and other professional development opportunities to help others learn about the open education movement in Colorado. In 2019, the CDHE and OER Council were recognized by WCET for their work as recipients of the WOW Award, which recognizes “organizations who implement exceptionally creative, technology-based solutions to contemporary challenges in higher education.

♦ Colorado’s Top 40: OER Curation Guides (site under maintenance): These resources are discipline-expert-reviewed, librarian-curated OER guides for the most popular courses in Colorado. Made possible by a grant from the Colorado Department of Higher Education and created by CCCOnline, on behalf of the Colorado Community College System (CCCS). Recipient of the 2020 EBSCO Community College Learning Resources Program Award.

♦ Interactive Geology Project: The Interactive Geology Project was formed in 2002 by professor Paul Weimer and colleagues with the goal of producing short 3D animations about the geologic evolution of key US national parks.  Over time, focus shifted from national parks to animating Colorado’s geologic history, with a key goal of developing a series of 5-10 minute vignettes covering each geologic time period. Projects are on display in museums, parks, and other venues across Colorado, the Western US, and Canada.

♦ PhET Simulations: Created and developed by the University of Colorado, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science and Math Simulations, all OER. "Founded in 2002 by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman, the PhET Interactive Simulations project at the University of Colorado Boulder creates free interactive math and science simulations. PhET sims are based on extensive education research and engage students through an intuitive, game-like environment where students learn through exploration and discovery."
